A time for reflection...

With another day of markets coming up (tomorrow, for those who can make it!), I felt like looking back at my marketeering progress over the past 3 years...

2008 - started small... 2009 - a focus on tropical prints

2009 - at Horn Island 2010 - expanding! note my lovely, shiny new clothes rack!

And what will 2011 bring? here's a peek at what to expect for tomorrow...

I've been busy making these lovely vintage fabric blouses and shirt-dresses. For those who can't make it to the markets, have a look at my etsy or madeit stores...

Also available at tomorrows PKA Mini Market (TI) at my stall is the beautiful, natural, handmade hemp fibre Jewelry by the talented Cass Gordon!

Big Girls Blouse...

As requested, I have been spending the past week or so creating shirt styles for my Lady customers. Along with this lovely relaxed fit, tie waist blouse are several variations on my basic shirt dress pattern, all in softly ladylike vintage florals...

And this is just the beginning, as the shirtdress is such a versatile style to mix and personalise, expect to see a lot more of them coming out of my studio door!

In other news...
It would seem that I am on the verge of facilitating a series of sewing classes on Thursday Island, so keep your eyes on the notices around town, and come by my stall on Saturday March 12 for more details!
For those unable to drop by due to my remote location, keep an eye on this blog as I'll be posting all sewing tutorial projects for you to follow along at home! All I ask is that I get to see piccies of your results...

Christmas Wish

Sometimes a commission job comes along that allows me to create beautiful, individual dresses and to utilise the more specialised vintage fabrics I have in my collection...This is why I love what I do!

These three dresses were to be Christmas gifts for the sisters and friend of my client - Such a beautiful and personal idea!

Applique!

I very recently went into handmade gift mode for my family Birthday gifts, and tried my hand at various appliques! This has been a first for me, and was surprising fun, easy and very effective - so much so that my friends and family should watch out, come birthday time...

My first try was in creating an owl cushion cover for my older sister. I went with a european size cover (65 x 65 cm) as the point was a reading pillow. The square shaped proved difficult for creating an owl look, but I discovered that for retro style owls, its all in the eyes/beak/wings combo, and almost any shape would probably do. I added a pair of peaked ears for good measure though :)

My second Applique Project was a gift for my 2 year old niece, who had, just recently, moved into her 'big girls room'. The inspiration began when her mother showed me some wall decals she'd bought featuring the babushka doll, and then during a shopping trip to trusty Spotlight, I found this gorgeous babushka print fabric! I just new I had to use it to make something for my niece! The fabric was a light, soft cotton muslin, and to make a sturdy cushion cover, it needed a cotton fabric backing. I then got to search for a suitable image to use as the outline, and play around with my vintage offcuts until I had the perfect combination! Using a zigzag stitch on the small parts was tricky (which is why I chose to draw on the eyes and mouth), but I'm loving the final piece!

This last project was the trickiest one, as it involved cutout sections in the fabric to be appliqued, and stitching it directly onto a stretch tee was not the best plan. If I were to applique tees again, I'd definitely use an interfacing to strengthen the fabric, and either baste or preferably fuse the applique piece to the tee before sewing, in order to minimise buckling!
But the end result was still terrific, and the recipient (my VW Van mad Brother in Law) was very taken with his handmade gift!

Weekends are for me :)

When you work from home, it can be difficult to separate weekdays from weekends, especially when you still have the sewing bug on board!
So I've taken to getting crafty in a more selfish way! There are projects sitting in my head, waiting to come to life...and my weekends are where it happens! I've begun actualising all the pretty little projects I've always wanted to do... starting with these gorgeous little bikini tops I found in Notebook Magazine (they're from a Billy and Lola pattern)...

Reversible Cotton bikini top, perfect for lounging around the house on a balmy summers day :)

I've been spending days recently documenting and photographing my divine collection of vintage and one off fabrics. I never realised just how much I had managed to hunt and gather over the years!

Why spend my precious time like this, you ask?
So you are able peruse my fabric collection, select your favourites, and have a handmade original Alison Sarah garment made just for you!

Here is a sneak peek at some of the gems in my little studio...
